Exploring yourself through a creative process

Updated: Jun 25

You know that feeling when you’re stuck in a problem? You keep thinking the same thoughts or talking about it, but nothing seems to change. You feel tired and out of touch with yourself.

In the Expressive Arts session, we invite you to come back to your senses, take a step back from the issue, and see the bigger picture. Through creative experience, you discover new ways to respond to life.

Wake up the parts of you that know what needs to change but haven't had a chance to speak

The Expressive Arts is about exploring your question, or whatever is present for you, through a creative process. We use simple activities to activate your senses. This can include movement, sound, visual imagery, interaction with nature, writing, and more. You are guided to become fully present, use your imagination and play. You don’t need any art skills. It’s accessible to everyone.

Different forms of expression activate you on many levels. They help you become more present and attuned to what’s going on inside and around you. They wake you from the numbness (anaesthesia) of automatic responses you’ve developed in everyday life — same words, same routes, same inner thoughts.

A sense of clarity comes not from analysing, but from experiencing

In the session, the space becomes a creative playground where you can experiment with what’s around you. You’re invited to interact with materials, movement, sound, or objects — to follow your curiosity and explore. You engage with familiar things in new ways and learn from these experiences. Along the way, you’re guided to notice and respond to your feelings and needs. This can help you feel things differently, see what you hadn’t noticed before, and move through emotions that have been stuck. You gain knowledge about yourself through the act of creating.

Let yourself be surprised

Remember how you learned as a child? You tasted things, threw them, made noises, and discovered through action. You didn't know, and that’s why you were trying things out and seeing what happened. You didn’t worry about whether you were “doing it right”. We did this naturally, until we became too fixed in our understanding of who we are, what’s allowed, and what’s not.

Expressive arts bring you back to that space. Not childish, but creative, intuitive, alive. We allow ourselves to not know in a fixed way of thinking, and let ourselves experiment without worrying about possible scenarios of what could go wrong. Expressive arts helps to expand your "what's possible", take risks and let the process surprise you. You’re learning through experience, and it becomes part of who you are. Already in the experience, you discover new ways of acting and being, and discover new ways of responding to life situations.

At the end of a session, we also reflect to bring more awareness to what happened in your creative process: what it stirred up, what felt true, what you noticed, what you may want to let go and what to explore further in your everyday life.
